From 1966 to 1970 he worked on millimeter wave and microwave engineering as a Research Assistant at the Institute of High Frequency Engineering at the Technical University (RWTH) Aachen. From 1970 to 1975 he was involved in teaching and research in microwave integrated circuits, microwave ferrites and microwave measurement techniques as a Senior Scientist at the Institute of High Frequency Engineering of the University Erlangen-Nuremberg. From 1978 to 1987 he was a Professor of Electrical Engineering in Erlangen working on microwave and acoustic imaging including multifrequency holography and computerized tomography using various fields and waves (ultrasound, microwaves, thermal waves, and eddy current fields) for diagnostic purposes in medicine and engineering. Since 1987 he has been Professor of Electrical Engineering and Director of the High Frequency Engineering Institute at the Ruhr-University in Bochum, Germany. He is continuing research on measurement techniques, diagnostic imaging, and sensors in the rf and microwave area as well as in the ultrasonic area for applications in medicine, nondestructive testing, and industry.

Special research topics include high frequency ultrasound, high resolution ultrasonic imaging, ultrasonic signal processing & reconstructive imaging, ultrasonic tissue characterization, and elastography. In 1991 he was co-chairman of the 19th International Symposium on Acoustical Imaging in Bochum, Germany and 2001 co-chairman of the 35th Annual Biomedical Engineering Conference (BMT 2001) of the German Society of Biomedical Engineering (DGBMT/VDE) in Bochum.
Dr. Ermert received the Borchers Medal of the RWTH (Technical University) Aachen 1970 and the Best Paper Award of the VDE/NTG 1972. He is a member of German Association of Electrical Engineers VDE/ITG (Germany), IEEE (USA), German Society of Biomedical Engineering (DGBMT), German Society of Nondestructive Testing (DGZFP), and German Society of Ultrasound in Medicine (DEGUM), German Society of Acoustics (DEGA), American Society of Acoustics (ASA), and Union Radio-Scientifique Internationale (U.R.S.I.), Commission B (Elected Member). From 1989 to 1991 he was an elected member of the Administrative Committee of the IEEE Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics, and Frequency Control Society (Region 8) and since 1995 he is an Associate Editor of the IEEE Transactions on Ultrasonics, Ferroelectrics and Frequency Control and of the journal "Biomedizinische Technik" (Biomedical Engineering). He was president of the German Society of Biomedical Engineering (DGBMT, 1995-1997) and President of the Umbrella Organization Medical Engineering (DVMT) in Germany during 1999 – 2001. In 2000 he was elected Fellow of the IEEE. He is also the speaker and coordinator of the “Kompetenzzentrum Medizintechnik Ruhr” in Bochum, which was in 2000 one of eight winners in a competition about forming Centers of Excellence for Medical Technology in Germany (supported by the Government of the Federal Republic of Germany). In 2001 Dr. Ermert was elected as a member of the Academy of Science of North-Rhine-Westphalia, Düsseldorf, Germany.
